Turandot
Turandot
A celebration to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Giacomo Puccini
Opera in three acts
Librettists Giuseppe Adami, Renato Simoni
Puccini’s last opera Turandot, which was completed by Franco Alfano after Puccini’s sudden death in 1924, represents the conclusion and the last “true” climax of the great Italian operatic tradition. In this opera, Puccini brought the spirit of ancient China to life and introduced the international audience to unheard-of exotic and mystically charged musical worlds. The story of the beautiful but cruel Chinese princess Turandot, who poses three riddles to her suitors, including the unknown Tartar prince, is wrapped in a rich orchestral palette, highlighted by the solo roles of Princess Turandot, the slave Liù and one of the most famous tenor arias, Nessun dorma, sung by Prince Calaf. With this performance of Puccini’s last stage masterpiece on the anniversary of his death, we commemorate the centenary of the loss of one of Italy’s greatest operatic geniuses.
