Anastasia Matvienko
Anastasia Matvienko, a ballet soloist, was born in Sevastopol, Ukraine in 1982. She attended the Kiev State Choreographic School from 1996 to 2001. From April 2001 to October 2007, she was the principal soloist at the National Opera and Ballet in the Ukrainian capital. From October 2007 to March 2009, she became the prima ballerina at the Mikhailovsky Theater in St. Petersburg. She served as the principal soloist at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg from March 2009 until the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Matvienko won a silver medal at the Sergei Lifar International Ballet Competition in 2002. Two years later, in July 2004, she received an award for best dance couple and first prize from ballet journalists at the Varna International Ballet Competition. In June 2005, she won the gold medal at the International Ballet Dancers and Choreographers Competition in Moscow.
Matvienko has performed in leading solo roles at the Verona Arena in May 2008 and the La Scala Theatre in Milan in June 2008. Her extensive repertoire includes demanding solo roles such as Princess Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Odette/Odile (Swan Lake), Nikiya (La Bayadere), Clara (The Nutcracker), and the lead roles in La Sylphide, Giselle, and Raymonda. She has also excelled in roles such as Kitri (Don Quixote in the choreography of Marius Petipa and Rudolf Nureyev), Medora (Le Corsaire), Sabina (Spartacus in the choreography of Georgy Kovtun), Juliet (Romeo and Juliet in the choreography of Leonid Lavrovsky), and in ballets such as In the Night in the choreography of Jerome Robbins and Symphony in C in the choreography of George Balanchine.
