Opera Ballet

Sergiu Moga was born in Iasi, Romania. He completed his ballet training in Cluj-Napoca and began his dance career in 1988 as a member of the ballet ensemble of the National Opera there. In 1991, he joined the ballet ensemble of the Slovene National Theatre in Maribor, where he quickly became a soloist and performed numerous roles from classical and contemporary ballets such as the Prince and the Mouse King (The Nutcracker), the soloist in productions such as Moon Over Mississippi, Autumn – Four Seasons, and Concierto de Aranjuez, King Marke (Tristan and Isolde), Tybalt and Benvolio (Romeo and Juliet choreographed by Tiit Härma), On (Methadone), Tatar (Scheherazade), Bernardo (West Side Story), Espada, the Gypsy King, and solo fandango (Don Quixote), Gianciotto (Francesca da Rimini), Rothbart (Swan Lake), Hilarion, peasant pas de deux (Giselle), Spartacus (Spartacus), Cadet and Drummer (Cadet Ball), Golden Deity, High Brahman, Fakir Madavaja, Chief Drummer (La Bayadère), Franz (Coppelia), Toreador Escamillo (Carmen suite, choreographed by Valery Kovtun), Blue Bird (The Sleeping Beauty), Tamburmajor (Woyzeck), Birbando (Le Corsaire), Zorba (Zorba the Greek), and Transylvanian (Transylvania). He performed in Edward Clug’s original choreographies, such as Tango, Lacrimas, Radio & Juliet, Stabat Mater, Peer Gynt (Aslak the blacksmith, Begriffenfeldt), Les Noces (Father of the Groom), as well as in dramatic ballets by Valentina Turcu – Carmen (Toreador), Dangerous Liaisons (Gercourt), Eugene Onegin (Zaretsky), Death in Venice (German), Romeo and Juliet (Lord Capulet), Madame Bovary (Father Bovary), and others. As a dancer, he also appeared in dramatic productions such as Carmen, La Divina Commedia (Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso), and Babylon directed by Tomaž Pandur, and Merlin (Don Quixote) directed by Aleksander Popovski. In addition to dancing, he has also collaborated as a choreographer and stage movement designer on numerous productions with the Drama of Slovene National Theatre, including Hamlet, Perfect Strangers, The Suicide, Casimir and Caroline, The School for Wives, Life is a Dream, I Saw Her That Night, and Mourning Becomes Electra. As an assistant choreographer, he worked on ballet and dance productions by Edward Clug (Kekec, Carmina Burana, The Water Man, Aida), Johan Inger (Walking Mad, Rain Dogs), Alexander Ekman (Left Right Left Right), Jiri Kylian (Falling Angels), Jean-Christophe Maillot (Cinderella), and others. He has performed as a guest artist in Croatia, Portugal, Hungary, Denmark, the Netherlands, Mexico, Ukraine, Russia, Austria, Germany, Montenegro, Yugoslavia, France, Luxembourg, Israel, the United States, Italy, Romania, and Hong Kong. In 2005, he received the Lydie Wisiak Award from the Association of Slovene Ballet Artists for his performance in the title role of Zorba the Greek, and in 2007, he was awarded the Glazer Charter for his performance in the mentioned role and exceptional achievements in the field of culture.
